Happenings in 2011

Well, I’m back after a long absence. Our local upland bird season was better than expected after the wet spring. This fall, we hunted waterfowl in Texas and Washington as well as Montana and found excellent duck numbers all around. The high point of the archery season was watching Lori take a nice 4x4 whitetail.
Maggie, our young wirehair, had another terrific season. The labs are starting to show their age, and we re picking up a new female puppy in Oregon next week.Sadie my trusty old lion hound, managed to get lost on the first chase of the year and spent 14 nights on her own in the mountains. I had given her up for dead when another hunter picked her up on the road and contacted me. Now she’s fat and happy again--a Christmas miracle for sure.
Our recent trip to Texas was a lot of fun even though quail numbers are way down and desert mule deer are still smarter than I am. But we shot plenty of ducks, and Lori upheld our archery honor by killing a big javelina.
We leave this weekend to hunt ducks for four days in Washington before picking up the puppy. Then it will largely be quiet time until we head to Hawaii in March with bows and fly rods.
Cheers, and one of my New Year’s resolutions is to communicate more regularly. I promise. Don

The Language of Wings
We’re excited about our latest project… For the last decade I’ve been writing regular back page columns about waterfowl for Ducks Unlimited magazine, exploring a wide range of topics: hunting, retrievers, conservation, natural history, and other diverse elements of the waterfowling experience. So many people asked me about putting these columns together in book form that I finally did it, and we expect to have copies of The Language of Wings ready for distribution in October. Issued by Ravens Eye Press, the soft cover book includes 340 pages of text with nine previously unpublished chapters, over 70 B&W photos by Lori and me, and original cover art by Bob White, with a cover price of $23. It’s been an ambitious project, and I hope readers enjoy it.
